IT’S ABOUT PASSION…
While their life experiences are different, Rita Johnson and Maureen O’Brien are passionate about helping women excel. Rita spent 25 years moving up the ranks in McDonald’s Corporation. As a Sr. Director in Leadership Development, Rita was also the Chair of the Women’s Leadership Network for McDonald’s. That’s where the life paths of the two dynamic women intersected.
Rita hired Maureen to work with her and the Steering Committee of the WLN. Through that work, the two began to discuss resources that were deficient for women leading these networks. A conversation ensued about the significance of bringing women together across all industries to network, share best practices and success stories, specific to the acceleration of women in business. With the support and encouragement of Pat Harris, McDonald’s Global Chief Diversity Officer, the very first Global Women’s Leadership Forum™ was held on McDonald’s campus on September 16, 2009. Forty four engaging, powerful women attended that first Forum. From that first meeting, other encouraging “firsts” have happened:
- At the first Forum, when asked what should happen next, three major corporations, Allstate, Motorola, and Kraft agreed on the spot to host upcoming Forums.
- Following the Global Women’s Leadership Forum™ hosted by Allstate, that company began to identify high potential female leaders to regularly attend upcoming Forums exposing them to other high level women, across industries.
- At a Global Women’s Leadership Forum®, two major corporations agreed to combine resources to host an event for the women of the Women’s Leadership Networks in both companies.
- At the Global Women’s Leadership Forum® hosted by Motorola, one of the attending corporations, Molex, met the Superintendent of the Indian Prairie School District in Illinois, and sponsored a World Café for that school district (a model which they learned at GWLF) based on the Diversity of Thought theme from that meeting.
